A crane lifts the printing and coating system, which weighs around five tonnes, from the truck over the treetops to the forecourt of the "House of Optics" on the Welfengarten campus.

The Cluster of Excellence PhoenixD has laid the first significant building block for its planned production line for integrated optical systems: The Challenger 650 large-scale machine of nsm Norbert Schläfli AG has moved into the House of Optics. 

Two large trucks, a crane and half a dozen men had to work hard for about two hours: Then the machine, weighing around five tonnes, was in its new place in the House of Optics on the Welfengarten campus. 

The Challenger 650 is a high-precision, multifunctional printing and coating system that enables the development of printed electronics and other printed devices. The large-scale machine can process flexible and rigid substrates with an accuracy of fewer than 10 microns. 

By using this innovative machine in research and development as well as pilot and production applications, PhoenixD scientists can realise optical and electronic functionalities in a single manufacturing device. The machine's arrival thus marks a milestone in developing an integrated production line for fully integrated optical systems.
